What did you use for a “lovey” and when did you introduce it?

I just learned what a lovey is the other day. How old was your baby when you introduced it, and what did you use for a lovey? I would like to use one for my 2 1/2 month old so that she can use that instead of a pacifier for comfort.

A child that young still has an intense need to suck. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with using a pacifier, as long as you aren’t just using to it shut her up. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends the use of pacifiers at night as a possible prevention against SIDS.

In any case, I think a 2 1/2 month old is really too young to take comfort from any objects except a parent or caregiver, a pacifier, or possibly a mobile or something like that.

Some kids never take to a lovey. My older daughter had a “taggie,” which she realized she loved when she was about 8 months old. She’s almost 5, and she still sleeps with it. (She has other favorite things now, but she still keeps taggie around.) My younger daughter, though, never took a shine to any conventional object. At almost three, she has a rock (no lie) and a tiny, tiny rubber elephant that she got out of a gumball machine, and she needs those to go to sleep. She has stuffed animals that she likes, and a taggie of her own, but no official “lovey.”
